Kai's eyes grew wide when he saw that Ellie had taken the full brunt of the punch and had managed to grab his fist, and was still standing. That punch was enough to send grown men flying, and yet, she stood there, worse for wear definitely, but at the same time she was still conscious and fighting. In the hand that wasn't holding Kai's arm, a ball of white light was solidifying and growing larger, and that only be one thing, pure destructive energy. There were a number of things Ellie could do with that, she could smash the ground with it, or throw it at a tree, but Kai knew just what she was planning, she was about to hit him point blank with all she had. He only had one hand free and that wouldn't be enough to entirely block it, but he wasn't going to take it completely, not by a long shot.
The power that was held in his arms was enough to counter the spell, if it could be called a spell, if he launched his talons once again, but that wouldn't be possible, not right now, not at such a close range, so he would need to weaken the spell enough to where he could block the rest of it with just the aura around his arms. Just as Ellie cried out her declaration, Kai inhaled, sucking the light out of the spell, and even as she thrust the orb at him the light vanished, leaving nothing but a visible heatwave in her hand in the shape of a ball, the heat energy that he couldn't absorb. Kai brought up his free fist and its aura, the heat orb hitting it instead of his chest where it was aimed, and the blast was immediate. The eruption threw Kai and Ellie away from each other, the heat searing his arms even with their aura, and his face, where he couldn't guard. He really was getting tired of being hit with heat over and over, first his boot, then his arms and face, and now his arms and face again. He could only 'eat' so much light to heal himself.
Even as Ellie had been pushed to the ground, Kai was as well, but he was thrown less forcefully and simply lay there, feeling the lightly burned skin of his face crack a bit. It wasn't major, sure, it was all red from it, but he would heal from that with a bit of light snacking. (Its a pun) Across from him Ellie coughed and she curled up.
"Oi, Ellie, you good over there?" he called from his dry throat. No matter what Ellie said he was going to call the spar finished, mainly because he was tired of getting burned because he didn't want to hurt Ellie or he was in a position where he couldn't help but get burned. "Gotta tell ya," he added as an afterthought, "I'm not used to being burned so often in one day."
