Her reaction was not a surprise to Bunji, when she rose to her feet he only watched her having a pretty good guess as to what was going on. Her body language said it all, and her tone when she spoke she was obviously upset, this only ate away at him even more, it made him hate himself even more for doing this to her. She was more than just a friend in his eyes, and all he wanted was for her to be happy but even then he could not allow himself to fall into that hole again, he wasn’t ready to dive blindly into things with her. Perhaps she was not thinking about them in that sense, but he was because when she left, it was like reading a book halfway he felt things were incomplete between them, and he felt that he wanted to do it again but this time to really finish it all the way through. It was just that he wanted things to be normal between them, a normal relationship where if it ends because of normal reasons then it wasn’t meant to be, but the first time around it all ended so abruptly because she wanted to leave to explore the world. Even though he wanted to not let her go, he did, and after all this time the man had suffered internally when he laid about sleeping, it was to dream about better days.
Yet now that she was here in physical form he felt inner turmoil, and conflict one side wanted to hold this woman, and shower her with all the passion he could muster, win her over again. However, the other half wanted to walk away, and if need be never lay eyes on her again go back to his old ways go back to his dreams where the ending was always perfect, where he could escape his harsh reality. This was the side Bunji was leaning towards, standing from the hammock he walked to her side stopping just at her side. “That’s what you need” he said to her suddenly his tone remained oddly serious, which was out of character for the normally charismatic Bunji, however his smile remained which was there just because he was still trying to hide how he really felt inside but doing a terrible job at it.
“…Find….Find someone else, it’ll be better for you that way. You shouldn’t be around someone like me anyways, things have changed, and the people I associate with now are no good. Just because I am corrupted, doesn’t mean I should drag you down with me” he said trying to make it look like he was doing this out of selflessness. When in reality this was him being as selfish as he had ever been, selfish by not acknowledging her feelings, or even considering them, all because he saw this as the best route for the former lovers. “Hey” he would say suddenly as he reached for the back of her nearest hand with his palm, if she allowed it he would bring it up to make her palm face upwards. Placing a cold object on her palm he would then say, “Remember the little old lad in Magnolia? The one that makes that strawberry milk you like so much, the really sweet one. You should stop by, she always asks me about you when I go buy a few cartons off of her” he said with that Bunji released her hand, but did so hesitantly as his hand slowly slipped away from hers even his fingers purposely brushing against her hand.
Surely this would be the last time he would see her, and he figured it was best for them if it was that way. “Best of luck to you Berry” he said his tone becoming softer, and his eyes began to get a little misty, he had tried so hard to avoid this but he knew it was better to walk away from her now. With that Bunji, walked on away from the girl leaving her there with the hammock, and the strawberry carton in her hand. One he knew she would remember, the pink design, dotted with strawberries, and the strawberry haired girl that sat on the Y at the end of the word strawberry the girl Bunji always said was April. Once he stepped out in the town streets, he took in a deep breath unable to prevent the few tears that rolled down his cheek, but even then he smiled “It’s for the best” he said to himself to reassure, and justify his actions just now were the best he could have taken. With that Bunji sniffled just once before walking on, and disappearing amongst the late morning crowd that had gathered around the shopping center, leaving Berry behind.
