If there was something that never plagued Kai, it was fear, or at least, he never admitted to feeling fear. He had been 'unafraid' when he went out to the woods and accidentally encountered a large dog, though he had run back to the property as fast a possible. He had been 'fearless' when he took it on a dare to go up to the old house down the road and walk to the second floor, he had only come out screaming when he thought he heard a ghost. But the sound in his sister's voice, that made him afraid, and he didn't deny it.
He walked along side Mizuki, quietly, as his teacher had shown him, padding lightly on the balls of his feet, silent as a shadow. They were heading towards the armory now, and he could feel it, an ominous presence around them. Something was definitely wrong. However, he had to stay collected, calm as the surface of a spring lake.
At this moment he pulled out Needle, holding the handle with a grip that was neither loose nor tight. With his foot he nudged open the door to the armor, to where their father kept all the weapons and armors that he used with his requip magic. The room, unlike the rest of the house, was lit. Lanterns in each corner, and the light revealed that someone had obviously been here and been in a rush. Weapons of various types and sizes lay scattered about the floor, as though picked up, considered, and then dropped, as were some of the armors. Kai's eyes widened for a moment, then thinned as he focused on the far door, the one leading outside and into the early morning. A single blade of moonlight came through the crack, the door itself wasn't fully closed, and that was a sign in and of itself. Father never left that door open, he always locked it after leaving to stop anyone from coming in through the armory into the house.
"Come on." he said, fear in his voice, and he pulled Mizuki across the room with him and out the door. The morning was arriving but the moon was still high and it lit their way. The lacrima car was still parked, which wasn't right. The trading office was too far to walk to before the day started, what were their parents playing at? With sword drawn, Kai began to follow the road, he could see light footsteps in the soft earth alongside the driveway, footprints that were definitely their parents.
A puzzled look crossed Kai's face however, as they came to a point where there weren't two pairs of tracks, but three, the third being much lighter and slightly fresher than the two belonging to their parents. Kai was a bright kid, and it took him just a few seconds to put two and two together. He suddenly looked around, sword pointing off into the trees as he still guided his sister down the road. They were not alone. Their parents were being followed, and that meant...
Releasing his sister's hand Kai took off running, following the tracks and hoping Mizuki was right behind him, they had to find whoever was following their parents!
