- - - - - Corporal Jones' last words literally petrified her, and the entire atmosphere in this tent just grew a thousand times gloomier. Grown men and women, officials that have come to know and love the man, started shedding tears, but the guy who was taking this the hardest out of everyone in this place was probably that young kid. He looked extremely devastated. It was at that very moment when everything clicked inside AJ's head. The kid might be one of the many proteges that Jones took under his wing, offering advice and pretty much just grooming him to be a future leader.
"Right.. everyone, listen up." The General spoke, not ignoring the fact that Alexis' hand rested on her shoulder. That girl would most likely be able to feel that she's trembling. No matter how many times AJ had to do something like this, she couldn't ever get used to it. Yes, she made the promise to Allie, her former partner and ex-General of the Knights that she'd never kill anyone again, but when it came to situations with circumstances such as this, AJ knew what needed to be done. "We.. ain't got much time. Those who can get on their feet, do so. Respect and honor this man for his years of service and endless contributions."
"And.." As AJ took the initiative and bowed, almost all the other troops in the same tent proceeded to do the same, hopefully out of their own respective course of action, and not because she asked them to. Every single one of these men and women should possess a certain quality that differentiated them from one another, and though it would take a bit of time and experience before they get to that next level, the only thing that mattered is that they wouldn't lose themselves in this line of work. Corporal Jones is a perfect example of that, and there is absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind that there is anyone better. "Thank you. For all that you've done, not only for me, but.. for everyone else."
"D'aw.. you're makin me feel.. weird here. But.. please, all of ya'll, stand up. Don't be sad. Cause.. I ain't really.. sad about this. I'll get to see my wife and kid again.. up there."
That.. struck a nerve. It was due to her own still-developing memories of her past life that she was able to relate to such a thing. Still, with each passing second, they were at risk of being in danger, and she was certain that the Corporal fought to maintain control with everything that he's got. "Yeah.. Corp.. could you uh.. follow me outside? Ain't exactly a good idea.. to like.. y'know. Do it in here."
As of that moment, silence hung in the grief-filled air, as the Corporal nodded. His skin grew increasingly pale, but he got up and followed AJ out of the tent, without any help. The sea of troops in the tent parted ways for the both of them, and it didn't really seem like any of them were interested in watching what was going to happen soon. She wouldn't mind if either of them wished to see it, they deserved that much. And so, wordlessly, she marched out of the tent, followed by the man behind her.
The weather, despite being a nice cloudy blue, held a much more evil presence. Evil, because of what happened today. Evil, because blue is often perceived as the color which reflected utter sadness. Evil, because such nice weather shouldn't exist on a day like this. Evil, because the floor was stained with blood of countless innocents turned into monstrosities.
"Adrienne.. hurry.."
His voice now resembled that of a sickly old man, with a hint of what sounded like a grungy, hungry growl. Without wasting anymore time than necessary, the General activated one of her requip sets. One that people rarely knew existed, much less had the chance to lay their eyes on. A set of armor so dark and so menacing, that it is rumored to drive a person into a state of petrification just by laying their eyes on it. A cursed set of armor along with an equally cursed weapon that is simply known to the world as 'Ruler'.
"Good.. god almighty.." Once the dust cleared, and everything else was done, the General stood there, wielding a spiked whip, with the head of what was the former serpent queen attached to its front. Corporal Jones was probably scared witless by then, but he clearly didn't show it. In fact, his only response was a small chuckle. "Ya still ain't.. holdin the sword right, hon.."
"It ain't a sword, Corporal. Are you really.. sure about this?"
"Yeah. I ain't.. the type of person to offer anyone any last words. 'Sides.. its better this way."
"Surely.. you'd have a last wish. Please.. just tell me somethin. Anything at all."
"Respect. Just like.. Allison tried, I ain't.. want.. us to be disrespected. I know you can change all of it. You've already.. grown up. You'll know... what to do.."
".. Fine.. Jeez.. I was hopin for somethin easier. But.. I guess.. I'll do my best. Not just because you asked me to, but because I was going to in the first place. You.. ready?"
"I've been ready for a long time, Adrienne. A longass.. time. Daddy's.. coming home."
With a final nod, AJ raised her weapon and swung it. The aftermath of the sheer collision between cursed weapon and flesh alone would be enough to keep him from coming back, but it didn't stop dear old Medusa from reveling in this moment, showered in the man's blood. No matter how powerful the venom that induced the zombification process was, it wouldn't be powerful enough to make the serpent queen suffer. In fact, the more potent the poison, and the more infected the blood gets, it would only serve to increase her hunger to new heights.
But for now, all AJ did was stand there, still donning her armor. Once again, she had taken the life of another comrade, though in the past, she had been sent to jail for a full year, despite the situation not being that different in terms of why she did it. Once again, she had been forced to take the life of a person she knew and cared dearly for. Will this be the last time? Probably not. She hoped it was the case, but in her line of work, in the battlefield, uncertainties filled everyone's minds. Grief and sorrow lurked around each corner, waiting for that precise moment to pounce, in hopes of completely taking someone over. As close as AJ was to the edge, she knew for sure that she did the right thing. Not necessarily the thing that she wished to do, but just like so many others before her, it was for the greater good.
